    x264 encoding-your views

I'm currently encoding using the x264 codec (a free opensource avc encoder).

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this codec, if so please share your impressions. Since I'm a novice in this arena, I'd gladly appreciate any settings/encoding advice as well.

    Well my encode finished.

It looks pretty good. If my next couple of tests go as good as this, I may just switch over from xvid

what don't you like about xvid? x264 is still in development stage.

I like xvid (notably its ability to play perfectly on most standalones). But after my encode with x264 I'm pretty impressed---especially since it's still in an early development stage.

        Have you tried it out?

i have tried x264, gives better quality than xvid, but not much use in HDTV encoding (or anything higher than 720x576 ), as you'd need a supercomputer to decode at full fps. I don't like watching anything if it takes up more than 50% CPU usage (makes me feel like my PC's really old)

xvid development has, however, considerably slowed down http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=97685
