Video causes CPU Lag

Hey guys,

If this is in the wrong section then please forgive me this just seemed like the most appropriate section to post it in..

Now guys the problem im having is that whenever I try to play any sort of video file in Windows Media Player and/or Quicktime, it will either run and tell me that I dont have the codec to view, OR if it has decided that I do have the codec to run it, the video player will just freeze up.. and it will go into like slow mo.. My CPU usage from WMP will jump from 99 to 0, 99 to 0, constantly until i CTRL+ALT+DLT and get rid of it..

It is really annoying and I have formatted about 5 times in the past week with no outcome. I dont know what caused the problem but I do know that formatting isnt something that is going to fix it :S

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions your help would be greatly appreciated, as ive tried everything I could think of and fixing it is beyond me :S

I have had the exact same problem and no where exactly explain a solution to this problem. I know if you install ffdshow it will work but it does slow down the computer greatly. I dont prefer it, so me too I await someone with an answer.

download & install the latest (alpha) version of "ffdshow"...

Thanks for trying guys, Unfortunately I have formatted again AND installed this FDDShow with no luck :/

first of all, give details on you computer... cpu, ram, graphics card, etc

has this always happened or has it started just recently? which OS are you running? have you installed any codec packs (DO NOT instally any)?


then make sure:

1. you have the latest version of directx (9.0c)

2. you have the latest drivers for your graphics card

3. your graphics card is seated correctly and firmly in its slot

CPU: AMD 2600+ @ 1917Mhz
RAM: 512 DDR
Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce 6600GT - 128mb

I have Direct X, latest drivers and it is seated firmly in place..

It has only just recently started happening and the 6600GT is new.. Im not too positive whether it was happening before I got the 6600GT but im pretty sure it was the same :S

try playing the files in another player, such as the free "media player classic"
