I know it's a bump but it's related to the thread....

Do I have to attach this "wire" that shorts the S-Video to the actual pins on the S-Video CABLE or do I insert it somehow into the S-Video holes on the S-Video port?

Hey, I have the same thing wrong with my EVGA 8800 GTS 640MB...lolz im a big spender....any way i am very angry that my tv is still in black and white.
Now i can't explain very well so i will pictures that are worth 1000 words.

              here is my card

my card came with one of these

VisionTek offers Laptop docking stations, PC graphics cards, PC memory, SSD Storage, Thunderbolt 3 eGFX enclosures, PC cables & adapters, portable wireless speakers, and other PC & mobile accessories.

              the end looks like this

i connect that ^^^^ adapter to this

i connect only the yellow cable (the only one that matters to my VCR)i choose the correct channel on the VCR and power up. My VCR is connected to my tv through coax cable

my tv has my computer screen on it (YAY!!!!!) however it is in black and white

i have tried that thing with adjusting the saturation and it did not work. What have i done wrong???AND OF COURSE I HAVE THE UP TO DATE DRIVERS!!!!!!!!

i have also tried things like this

(sigh it did not work $65 down the drain)

so that is about as dumb and user friendly as i can make my self. Please if and when you respond with an answer use pictures about what to do. i am at the end of my rope. i am begging you guys for some help waht do i need to do or buy? perhaps one of these?

and if all else fails one of these?

Hi guys, was looking for a solution to my Nvidia Composite tv out black and white problem, did some research and didn't see anything that I hadn't tried yet you know drivers, settings and all that kinda ill ****

Well I found the problem eventually

I updated to Win XP x64 and then my tv went black and white on me when I installed the latest drivers for my 8800 gts , apparently I had to switch my cable to another output on my splitter ( you know the one they deliver with new gfx, with 4 composite outputs(blue, green, orange, red) and 2 svideo(1 black and 1 white)
It used to be connected to the green one (Y.out comp.out), now it's the blue one (R.out)

So if your having probs and also have a splitter like me, just get your settings right and try the different outputs

Hope I can help someone with this, I know it made me pissed

I took the time to sign up to quickly share my experience. I have a card that windows identifies as NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 which has an s-video port. It worked perfectly under default settings (the only config I did was to set it to play video as full screen on the TV) on my 2001 model Sony 25" TV. I bought a 2nd hand Panasonic 34" QuintrixF and it output the picture in B&W. I could move the s-video cable from the Sony where it was showing colour to the Panasonic where it would show B&W. I briefly got it to show colour, but I started playing a movie and it reverted to B&W and I couldn't reproduce it playing in colour again.

This fix from page one of this post fixed it:

First, open your Display Properties and click on the [Settings] tab. Click the [Advanced] button. Click on the [GeForce (etc.)] tab. Select from the side menu [nView Display Settings]. Right click the display that should be your TV (normaly either "2" or "1b" ). Highlight [Select TV Format]. Click [Advanced...] at the bottom of the menu. Change "Video output format:" from [Auto-select] to the apropriate connector. Click [Device Adjustments]. .... just click [Restore Defaults].

                      Cheers
                      Hope this helps someone.

I was upgrading from an FX5200 -- where the TV output worked fine -- to a 7600GS -- which showed black and white on the TV from the second I plugged it in. I tried upgrading and downgrading drivers. I tried the saturation trick. I tried the Classic View switch and the S-Video/Composite switch -- no SCART here.

What worked for me was taking the thin wire out of a wire tie and bending it into the tiny horseshoe shape as pictured on the solution page. I then inserted that into my video card's female SVideo connector and plugging in my standard svid-to-rca adapter on top of that.

Bang, zoom, color TV output again.

                          In-depth Analysis

First of all, let's see what 7-pin S-Video is. S-Video format has Y and C channels and needs only 4 pins. The remaining pins are normally used to transmit composite video. In older nVidea cards the signal was always sent to both Y+C and composite pins, no matter what type of TV was connected. The S-Video to composite adapter they gave you with the card didn't really convert anything, but had an RCA plug connected to the composite pins.

In the newer models nVidea decided to add component (YPbPr) format. It would be a good idea if they didn't screw it up with faulty soft/hardware. The card is supposed to detect the type of TV according to the load on the pins.
-In S-Video mode it sends Y+C signal to Y and C pins.
-In component mode it sends Y+Pb+Pr signal to 6 pins.
-In composite mode it sends composite video to the Y pin.

They give you an S-Video to 3 RCA adapter you can use to connect component or composite TV.

However, it didn't work for me. My composite TV was detected as S-Video and we all know that Y channel of S-Video is black & white. Besides, I couldn't change the connection type manually neither with the old nor with the new driver. No matter how many times I told the wizard that my TV is composite, I never could actually switch the TV-out to composite mode, so I solved the problem the hard way. I left it in S-Video mode and connected C and Y pins with a thin wire, as it was said at this forum.

Another solution is to connect it through a standard 4-pin S-Video to composite converter. The one from an earlier model will not work, because there's no signal at composite pins and you need to actually mix Y and C channels.

However, if you succeed to convince the driver that your connection is composite, you can connect your TV to the Y RCA plug and forget about the rest.

I had the same problem with black and white picture. Then the other night, I was watching a programme from my PC and after 20 mins I realised it was in colour. As far as I was aware, I hadn't done anything different.

Last night, still good. Watched another episode in colour.

Then, this morning, black and white.

I then stumbled across the solution. I changed the scart to the different AV sockets. But that didn't in itself make a difference. AV1 and AV2 both black and white. Then, when I was on AV2, I accidentally pressed the AV2 button a second time, making it go to AV25.

                              This is in colour.

Press it again to AV2 and it goes to black and white.

Just registered to share this. Don't know if it's of any use to anyone, but you never know.

                              Cheers

Like TC67, I have registered just to share my solution to the black and white TV problem.

For months I've been trying to connect my NVIDIA GeForce 7600GS to my really old CRT TV. I got myself a decent quality S-Video to composite lead, updated the graphics driver and all I could get was black and white, whether selecting S-Video output or Composite output.

After messing up all the settings and having to re-install the driver, the problem remained. I tried connecting the chrominance and luminance pins together with some wire as some people have suggested, even tried connecting the ground pins together - neither worked.

Looking at different options, I decided to get a S-Video to Scart lead, rather than plug the Composite end of the other lead into the jack on my Playstation Scart adaptor. This gave me a blank screen, even after trying all possible settings on the graphics driver.

Then, and this is the weird and wonderful part, I noticed options that were not there before. In the NVIDIA Control Panel, under Video & Television, on the Change the Signal or HD Format screen, I noticed I could change the type of connector to use. Before, the only option was Auto-detect. So I changed it to S-Video and I could even choose the signal format which I couldn't do before. I chose I/PAL as I live in the UK but still had a blank screen.

I reasoned that these options must now be available because of the new lead - the TV could now communicate with the PC. Why there was no picture I have no idea, so out of interest I unplugged the S-Video to Scart lead and plugged in the original S-Video to Composite lead and it worked. IN COLOUR! I did a double take. It is now definitely in colour! Woo-hoo!

I changed the signal to an NTSC out of interest as well (my TV accepts both signals anyway) and they both work, except PAL is clearer.

I'm now leaving the settings exactly as they are, even though the edges of the image can't be seen on the TV, I don't want it to mess up again. It even survived a restart. I'm running it in Clone mode as it's only to watch videos from the comfort of my sofa, but I'm so happy.

I hope this helps someone. I know from searching forums that many people have this problem. Why NVIDIA can't just have all the options available all the time I don't know. But if you can trick the driver like this, it works.
