After installing mediaportal and ffdshow I no longer have video!

I have tried just about every format of video file, and none of them have worked. Sound always works just fine, but no video. I do not know what happened so I removed both mediaportal and ffdshow but to no avail. I have all of the correct codecs etc and I have been watching movies for ages and have really kept up on codecs with gspot and with zoomplayer.

Basically I watch your standard avi files that are downloaded the majority of the time and I was wondering if you guys had any tricks to perhaps get video again when I play a movie type file.

    Thx

Welcome to the Digital Digest Video forum aowen512!

One possible solution is to do a "System Restore" if you have XP or 2000. Just restore your computer back to a time when things were working properly.

(Side-note: You may have to many codecs installed.)

Well I dont think that I have too many codecs installed as I have never installed a codec pack or collection or what have you and have always just installed what was needed at the time from gspot. Granted it may be the case but Im not too sure it is. Say that is the case, how would I go about removing some/all of the codecs and just reinstalling the ones that I need for sure.

I will check about system restore but im pretty sure I have that turned off.

Thanks for your reply and help and if you guys think of anything else please reply and keep this thread going!

I will update a little later today about my system restore when I get back to the computer with the issues.

when you say 'they don't work', what exactly do you mean? do you get error messages? is it just black? which media player do you use? which version of ffdshow? (make sure you download the 'celtic druid' version at http://www.free-codecs.com )

got latest graphics card drivers? latest directx?

ffdshow is the BEST playback filter for every single file type (except mpeg-2/dvd), and i won't have anybody dissing it!!

i do have latest gcard drivers(though modified.. never had a problem before)
            yes latest directx 9c

lol ok well ive made things worse... it was just black screen.. had audio but video was just black

            i was using zoomplayer pro

now that ive been fing around with my codecs and what not i get this error message when trying to play a video file on zoomplayer

            error has occured
unable to create the directx interface

i did f with the directx directshow filters apperantly, even though i tried to not mess with those.... i tried to reinstall directx but to no avail
IS THERE MORE I CAN DO WITH THE DIRECTX STUFF?????before i move onto installing a new windows

any tips before i go about just 'doing up' my windows hardcore... if i just reinstall windows will this resolve my problems or will the codec ish still be there and a full clean install woudl be the way??

thanks alot... and btw.. this is the third time ffdshow has f'ed up a computer ive worked with (no, not same one, 3 different comps) so i can honestly say i was not a big fan and the only reason i did install it was because that program required it

please anom... CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT FFDSHOW!! before i shun it forever and ever

if you've messed with directx, and possibly other system files, i'd recommend a clean windows install. it will be a definite fix, as long as there is nothing wrong with your hardware...

should you choose to go ahead, install anything you wish from the following list (i recommend you install ALL of these, they have no conflicts, and give highest quality video playback IMO.everything in this list is safe to install): ffdshow (cetic druid build), powerdvd (nvidia purevideo decoder is better, though), directx 9.c (ofcourse), latest graphics card drivers, "quicktime alternative"(for quicktime files), "real alternative"(for real player files), "ogg ds filters"(for playing ogm/ogg). that is all you will be needing to play just about anything

the best media player in the world IMO is "media player classic". rock stable, uses very little resources, excellent advanced options. ffdshow is the best(and free) playback filter the world has ever seen, so don't lose faith in it

let us know how it goes

not sure if it was the celtric druid build or something else about the ffdshow filter, but everything else on your list ive already got.. even the classic media player and powerdvd surprisingly

well before i go ahead and do a fresh install of windows..... is there nothing i can do to try and delete and reinstall directx or something of that nature to try and get those directx directshow filters back on my comp?

and you are suggesting a full clean install and not just a windows repair?... do you not feel the repair will solve it?(hate to lose sooo much... but watching movies is a MUST!)

after trying to play a file in media player classic, the error i get when playing an avi file is : failed to create the filter graph object....

perhaps that might help in changing something?

                    try this: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=522

if that doesn't work, your best bet is format...

you don't have to lose anything when you format. simply put all the files you need on a second hard disk, or a second partition. format the partition which has windows on it, clean install windows, then copy the files back

do i need to xfer every single folder other than 'windows' over to keep everything in working order?

also.. when i go for the new installation of windows.. i have a raid setup and i was not able to/never saw where i could partition the drive which i very very much wanted to do.. how can i get that partitioned this time around?

that's not what i meant. if you do that, your going to have major problems with your software.

what you do is transfer all your movies, music, program installation files (NOT your c:\program files folder, or any folder in that folder), pictures, etc over to the new hard disk. format your current hard disk, install windows, then re-install all programs, games, and copy all files that you want from your 80gb hard disk

after a clean install, you have to install your programs again from scratch. i was under the impression you have done a clean install before

i have done a clean install but i was under the impression that i could keep programs in working order from ur post.. i knew about keeping random media files etc

also do you have any idea on the raid partioning?

would i be able to just install windows clean, and then use a program after like partitionmagic or the sort to create a partition after the fact
