    MKV Playback Problem

    Hi all,

I haven't been playing much in the field for some time so pardon me if this question seems redundant. THere is a particular opening (to an unlicensed anime that I really like - Air) that I have been searching for a long time and finally found. Unfortunately, it is released in the Matroska format (that I haven't given myself time to experiment with) and already I am having playback problems at my first try.

I am using Classic MP 1.0pre3 with the Media Splitter filter downloaded from Matroska website. With this setup, audio is stuttering and no config tweaks I did (in FFDShow and in CMP) changed the situation. On a (probably unrelated) note, the media player is also unable to show me 'true full screen view' when viewing any videos in full screen mode, i.e. video screen remains unresized at 100%.

Can someone tell me where things are going wrong? Is it the programs I am using or is the file itself badly encoded? Thanks!

    p.s.
Torrent Link to file (opening clip to an unlicensed anime series, but please tell me if this is prohibited anyway)

its just that matroska isn't a very popular format, and i've only ever played an mkv file once

as long as the anime is unlicensed, it isn't illegal AFAIK, or against forum rules...

I remember Matroska being 'rumoured' to be the next popular format on the net. Apparently that hasn't happened yet.

And still no solution to this little problem of mine.

I believe that you are trying to play this file with the built-in MKV splitter of MPC, being completely outdated. The Haali MKV splitter will therefore normally, if it detects MPC, deactivate that internal MKV splitter in the MPC registry settings, but only if it is being installed AFTER MPC was installed/run first time.

Reading your message above, it appears to me you first installed the splitter, then used MPC first time (it will create its registry setting on first execution, as it doesnt need an installer) ?

Reinstall the Haali Mediasplitter, or better even the CCCP community codec pack or the matroska lite pack, so that the MPC internal MKV splitter is deactivated. Our lite pack will only install

          - Haali splitter
          - matroska muxer
          - CoreVorbis decoder
          - vsfilter (DvobSub) for subs

It is fully safe to install, and we never ever got reports of conflicts with other stuff anywhere.

Alternatively, you can also goto the MPC settings and deactivate the internal, built-in MKV splitter manually. Try again and report back if it worked for you.

P.S. Many anime MKV files now use h.264 video codec, because of its outstanding compression for anime. However, you need at least a 1.4 GHz AMD Athlon to play these files fluently, without stuttering ....

P.S.2. Classic MP 1.0 Pre3 ? Where did you get this from ? Is this a strange naming for Media Player Classic i hope ? Get the latest version from http://sf.net/projects/guliverkli

Support the future of audio and video encoding, matroska as open standard container format and Gstreamer as open source, x-platform multimedia platform - Contact us on Corecodec, the concentric circles of audio and video, or on IRC.CORECODEC.COM #matroska ; for best viewing matroska file use The Core Media Player ( TCMP )

            Re.

I came across my first mkv file the other day. I downloaded vlc and it played it straight off. There are also tools on videohelp to demux the file into a vid and a sound file you can then check the codec needed for the video and download - vp3 codec may be one you need or then convert them into another file format

            also check these links

VLC will play most MKV files, only those with Realvideo (RV9/10) and ON2VP 6/7 cant be played as VLC doesnt have the right decoders built in. VLC is GPL and there are no GPL compatible decoders available for these video formats, thats why.

However, robux4, our team leader, has the idea to create a DShow plugin for VLC one day, or simply to do what Xine and mplayer are doing (they will link to the Windows DLLs on these codecs for decoding), so that all MKV files could be supported in VLC. Until then, you need to use DShow based players and install the matroska full pack and Real Alternative (or Realplayer) for Realvideo, as well as the ON2 VCM codec to play those MKVs.

              Regards
