i dont know y the problem is high resolution xvid?
not ALL avi work bad only the high res ones
it makes a huge improvment to normal res avi's, but not high res avi.
Decoding the audio also takes CPU and AC3 requires more than say mp3 I would imagine. Check out your CPU usage during playback. VLC is ok, but mplayer still uses less resources.
VLC still uses decoders, but as you said built in ones. From recollection it uses the same decoder as AC3Filter, ffdshow, etc. and it still requires CPU.
