Video and DVD playback trouble

Well everytime i try to play a video file(no matter what kinda file .avi .wmv or whatever), or dvd(wether burned or original), the program that plays it(power dvd, winamp, win media player...you name it) freezes up and doesn't play the file at all.No problems with playing audio files, but with video i get no video and no sound.

Also , i have ffdshow installed(latest version)...
And, when i click on render in Gspot, it starts rendering, comes to the end, but then it gets stuck there and freezes up.Thought i'd mention it.



Can someone please help before i throw my pc off the balcony.

its likely the problem is not in the files. make sure you:

1. get your latest graphics card drivers

2. downloads & install directx 9.0c

3. uninstall all codec packs

4. uninstall ffdshow, install the 'october 13 2005' version of ffdshow from http://www.aziendeassociate.it/cd.asp?dir=/ffdshow

5. try using 'media player classic' to play your files

for how long has this been happening? have you tried using 'system restore' to bring you PC back to another date?

Here's the rundown:

3.Done
4.Done that too
5.Media player classic is no good either
Still nothing after doing all this.
This has been happening for a while now, and system restore does nothing.
Any idea what it is?

download Videolan and try playing a file with it http://www.videolan.org , it uses its own codecs/filters so it should be able to determine whether its a codec conflict/hardware issue/windows problem

Videolan fails too. It freezes up like any other player.Darn.

what are your PC's specs? have you ever gotten an error message?

sorry about the delay, i seem to have missed this thread

have you checked for spyware/adware/viruses?

click start-->run. type in "dxdiag" without the quotes. click the 'display' tab, and run both directdraw and direct3d tests. does it perform properly?

do you by any chance have access to another graphics card that you could try out in your PC?

the way i see it, it could either be a hardware (graphics card) related problem, or a windows installation that has become corrupt. if its the latter, a format & clean install would do the trick. its unlikely to be a codec issue, seeing as VLC didn't do anything either...

uninstall your audigy and try the onboard sound if you have it. creative seems to have issues with video files and messes them up. I dumped my audigy because of that.
also check to see if your onboard sound is on and then turn it off first in the bios.
