    ok here you go....thx btw.

Here is the list of filters.

    Default Direct Sound Device
    Video Renderer
    Audio Switcher -> Channel 1
    MPEG-2 Video Decoder (greyed out)
    AC3 Audio Decoder (greyed out)
    DVD Navigator

    ctrl+alt+delete cpu usage hovers between 20's and 30's %

I just made another crappy discovery. I just tried an audio CD and it chops now as well and sounds like it it playing slow! What the hell is happening here, these things all worked until the new card was put in.

first of all, i recommend you go into MPC's options, click 'filters' and untick 'mpeg-2 video'. this will enable dxva and improve performance.

then use 'dvd decrypter' to get the dvd onto your hard disk, and play it from there. (click one of the VOB files). see if its still choppy.

      got latest sound drivers?

        sound drivers?

        Realtek AC'97 Audio
        Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
        USB Audio Device

        This is my audio info.

Trying to download the proper sound drivers.

Could there be something wrong with the drive itself I wonder. Man this really sucks. I can't play audio discs now either. What could I have done wrong here. Is this a power supply issue maybe?

        erg!

How does dvd decrypter get it on my harddisk? It says it's doing everything automatically?

run dvd decrypter, choose your dvd drive (with the dvd in it) and click the big button you see

OK now I'm thinking it's a power problem!!!

I used the 'dvd decrypter' and the ripped the dvd and vob file play perfectly!! So it must be something with the DVD drive because as I mentioned above Audio CDs don't play right either, they seem to play slow!! AHH! What am I going to do now?

Maybe I'll have to call HP support. What do you people think? I need a beer and some sleep now.

I attached my system profile with this post.

I'm pooped. I'll check back tomorrow.

there were two problems- black screen instead of video, and stuttery playback when there WAS video. one problem down, one to go

first thing you should do is make sure DMA is enabled http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...threadid=44808

                Good Morning...

I will have to give this a try when I get home today. Like your other advice it sounds like it might work. hehehe. There' still hope I guess. I will diffenatly give this a try later. I hope it works. If it doesn't, my guess would be a hardware issue. The card might be sucking too much juice. But you would think a brand new cpu could handle this card. Another thing that confuses me is why I can use dvd play discs to play huge games with no problems at all? With all graphics and audio options maxed!

Anyway, this forum is great and I appreciate the help.
                Thanks

its very likely a hardware problem, your dvd drive seems to be reading at a very slow rate. i don't think its got anything to do with the power supply or power consumption of your graphics card (unless your PSU is very very old & weak. and even then, it would do more than stop dvd playback!)

regarding how you can play games from discs, usually the game is acually played from the hard disk, so the dvd/cd is not being read. the fact that you need the cd/dvd in the drive to play the game is just a copy protection measure the manufacturer takes. some games stream only the game's music from the cd/dvd, but that doesn't require a speedy transfer anyway...

                    Damn.

This is freaking me out. It all worked fine until I put the new card in and I was very gentle about doing so. LOL! Last night I opened it up to make sure all the wires, (lots of em) were all connected snuggly, and they were as far as I can tell. I don't know how the freakin thing would just conk out. It all appears fine.

I'll have to try what you posted about the DMA. Then go from there.

                        Overboard,
I have been having some problems w/ nvidia drivers and playing any dvd files.
I used the add remove programs to uninstall any video driver package,
then dbl checked in device manager and uninstalled from there, then ran
nasty file remover, letting it look for any kind of video driver that had been loaded on the computer. Downloaded newest drivers from nvidia.
                        All fixed.

                          Nice.

Thanks Chewy. Now I have 2 things to try. Think I might try this first because it just seems weird that the dvd drive would just start malfuntioning out of the blue. This all started with the new nVidia card, and trust me, I am super slow and careful when ever I'm inside my cpu. LOL!

                          Thx ppl

Mine started with an older set of drivers I loaded, didn't notice till I opened
Powerdvd to play files off hard drive.

The thing that makes my prob weird is that I can run avi, vobs, mp3s, etc...all off my harddrive with no probs. It only gives me trouble when I put a disc in the drive to play it.

sounds like dma or bad drive, if dma is enabled on drive,
take a disk(burned dvd) and benchmark with cdspeed
