That's the bottom line do what makes you happy and your preference. If you are satisfied with the end result and you like what you see.

Actually, my wife can see and hear the differences, but she just doesn't care!

          CHEERS!

Ironically, she has better hearing than I do. Although I have better eye-sight!

sorry tigerman, forgot to answer this,

            PC Specs:

            AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+
            2GB PC3200 Dual Channel RAM
            ASUS A8V-E SE Motherboard
            ATI X800XL 256MB PCI-E Graphics Card
            Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM 8Mb Cache
            Western Digital 200GB 7200RPM 8Mb Cache
            LG GSA-4163B DVD +R/-R
            LG DVD ROM
            Antec 450W PSU
            CMV 19" LCD

encoding a dvd (pal 25fps) cropped & resized by avisynth to 720x288, into Me GUI. all settings completely maxed out for quality (except 2-pass instead of 3. 3 is over-over-kill).

set it to 2 threads, used total ~70% cpu during first pass. first pass average 35.3fps

2nd pass average 4.71fps. cpu load varied ~75% to ~95%

obviously time isn't an issue for me

btw with the introduction of coreAVC, its quite possible to do full 1080p encodes and actually be able to play them on regular pc's

but even 720p goes something like 2fps!

and imagine the horror of having to deinterlace 1080i-->1080p!!!!! what a nightmare. i fear the day i need to use tdeint on something like that, we're talking 0.001fps

just did a 720p encode of a 94 min movie (jumanji-- source 1080p). settings were not maxed out (for my own pc's good), but still high.

started from 9:33pm, finished 5:05pm the next day. 1st pass averaged 8.179fps, second pass 2.69. gotta be the longest encode i've ever done!
