8 little squares come up while playing divx/xvid(s)

Don't remember what I did, if anything consciously? But it was a lagged response finding this out. It took me a while to notice that all my divx/xvid files that I had started playing have this strange white/black appearing transparent square boxes in the very top right hand corner. No matter what program i use eg; mplayer classic, bsplayer, powerdvd, the 8 squares come up.

I have uninstalled codecs via add/remove progs and also went into control panel / multimedia / video codecs, force removed all.

xvid and divx still play, really jumpy and lagged due to the latest codecs not being present however those annoying 8 squares are still coming up when attempting to play the files, there's some hidden filter or codec causing this. (hmmm)

any ideas or experience on how to remove this?

i have elecard installed, but only for their mpeg-2 splitter. their mpeg-2 decoder is quite good though (better than cyberlink's IMO)...
