Problems Capturing From Camcorder

I am a complete beginer to the camcorder lark so I would appreciate all the help you can give me. I have installed a Firewire card on my pc in order to transfer my recordings to my pc for editing and burning to dvd. However I can only capture about twenty seconds of video before the pc freezes up. This happens whether I use Windows Movie Maker or Nero. to capture to information. I would apprecaite any help plus any walkthroughs for beginners. Thanks in advance
