I have a seriously basic knowledge of copying and dowloading files.

I want to know whether the standard DVD player we all have in our living rooms will play "xvid" format. I have a movie that I have copied from a torrent and I now want to burn it onto a DVD-R...

Will this work or do I need to convert the file before copying?

Welcome to the forum but please from now on for your own sake & the forum's do not mention where the file came from just call it whatever type of file it is avi file etc.Your standard dvd player without knowing what it is will not play this format.Yes you will have to convert the file.

I reccomend DivX2DVD... a freeware program that converts AVI to a DVD in less than the time it takes to play the movie, and makes chapters too.

Get it here (direct EXE download).

Just open file, specify output folder, then specify what your TV is, either PAL (Europe/Asia/others) or NTSC (USA/Japan) and force that method. You can keep aspect ratio at Auto. That should work for your file.
