Convert DVD to AVI using x264

I am looking for a fairly simple way to do this. gordian knot is more than I can figure out.

the simplest way is to use virtualdubmod. or you can check out the (outdated) guide at http://www.doom9.org for gordian knot, should work just fine, not to mention staxrip.

but if you're familiar with avisynth scripts, MeGUI is definitely the way to go

how do you do it in virtualdubmod? could you point me to a guide?

not aware of a guide. encode just like you would xvid/divx, just choose x264 in the codec list.

I was looking at virtualdub, not virtualdubmod. I think we need some new names for these programs.

Ok I just gave virtualdubmod a go, the video is great, but the audio is horribly out of whack.

you mean out of sync?

by approximately how many seconds? if its only a few, you can fix in vdubmod through streams-->stream list-->interleaving-->audio skew correction

if its a lot, you've gotta re-encode the audio, use 'besweet' with the 'belight GUI' this time

it was about 4-5 seconds off

here's my method for fixing sync:

play the file in MPC. while playing, press 'o' on the keyboard. click 'audio switcher'. tick the box "audio time shift". GUESS how much the audio is off sync by, and enter it in milliseconds (1 second = 1000ms). (if the audio is before the video, use + value, if after, use - value).

click OK, you'll see the sync has changed. increase/decrease the ms value until you find the perfect value, in which the sound is in sync

then go vdubmod, set video to 'direct stream copy'. under 'streams' click 'stream list'. right-click the stream, and under 'audio skew correction' input the value you used in MPC.

save as avi, shoud only take a minute
