    AVI file plays sound but no picture at all

    so here is the thing i just downloaded an avi file and when i tried to play it on windows media player the bar at the bottom of the screen said requesting codecs, a few second later it said error downloading codecs!! Then the movie started to play with just sound but no picture. The sound was perfect but it just had no picture. If i do have to do something with codecs i just like to say i am brand new at this and have no idea what to do.

    Can I solve this peoblem with Nero, or Instant dvd, I also downloaded gspot but have absolutly no idea how to use it. If someone has any ideas please share @

    You need to download the appropriate codec. There are codec packs out there you can get, just do a google. I too have had some AVI (and others) that would only play audio but no video because the Codec was not able to be downloaded.

      I'd suggest avoiding codec packs. GSpot will tell you what video codec the file uses or at the very least the fourCC. A decoder for that is all you need to install.

        for a likely quick fix, download & install the latest ffdshow from http://ffdshow.sourceforge.net/tikiw...etting+ffdshow
        and try playing.

        if its still doesn't work, open the file in 'virtualdubmod', under 'file' click 'file information' and post all info shown

                Same Problem, now solved

                I had the same problem recently and I have all sorts of codecs. I tried the KLite pack available at FreeCodecs and then ran the avi file through GSpot and hit render. Everything ran fine after that.
                And, these are free and legal which is always nice.

                On GSpot, there is a buttom in the upper left corner of the bottom box. Selct your file then press render. If there is anything missing, the screen will show you what and why.

                  here is a screen shot of my probnlem

                  First of all I would like to thank everyone for their help but I guess it’s a good news bad news scenario. The good news is that I downloaded a simpler programme to use afrecodecvt and I solved the problem with the avi file that had sound but no picture.
                  <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
                  The bad news is that I had another avi file with no sound or picture and every time I tried to play it on windows media player a sign would come up saying ClassFactory cannot supply requested class. So I tried putting it through afrecodec but that didn’t find anything wrong with it then I tried putting it through gspot and it did find something wrong with it under file it said corrupt avi header. But like I said I don’t know how to use gspot . so here is a screenshot of my problem I hope it came out. Until then I might try to do what spia did
