    hmmm... I use MusicMatch Jukebox and it produces perfect MP3's at 128k CBR. I do not think it is LAME though, which is probably why.

    About the 320k being tops, I swear WMP says mine is 550! Want the file?

      Even at 128k CBR, lame would probably beat every other mp3 encoder.

      Definatly 320k is the max. Other codecs like vorbis and mpc allow for higher.

        in mp3 extraction, retagging, renaming etc!

          Yeah, it is cool. Especially because I get it for free from my Dell backup CDs

          Not even sure what codec MusicMatch uses but it sounds as good as a CD at 128k

          @celtic_druid would 320k VBR allow it to peak at 550k or not

            I use CDex and the lame encoder to encode all my mp3's. I encode at 192kb/s as I can't tell the differance between 192 and 320. I can tell the differance between 128 and 192.

            I guess it is just a matter of persoanl preferance, I have an 80gb hd just for music, so I don't mind encoding at 192. Plus where I get my music the lowest they have is mp3 192kb/s.

              Encoding with -V2 --vbr_new would be better. Should give you around the same average bitrate, but better quality, since with VBR you get 320k for hard to encode samples, offset by < 192 for easy to encode parts (silence, etc.). With CBR you get 192k no matter what, so on some parts you are just wasting bits, on others you don't have enough.

                Never had a problem with CBR here... not sure what MusicMatch does but I love it

                  The max mp3 is capalble of is 320k CBR, with VBR, some frames would have to be less than 320k, so the max is < 320.

                  In terms of quality, VBR is much better than CBR. With VBR you are aiming to reach a certain quality. With CBR you are aiming for a certain bitrate.

                    Put it this way... if it aint broke, don't fix it

                    128k MP3 CBR sounds like CDs do in my CDs, even in my dad's car stereo that has at least 6 speakers in it, and a huge subwoofer... when burned to a CD.

                      great post,very very cool!!!!
                      as my english is horrible,sometimes i can think to write exact what you posted but i can't find the right words to express myself.
                      "you got my words,feelings" with cool explanations to get good results showing why and how encode to mp3.

                      @ drf and all:
                      in audio,size and the encoder used means quality,no matter what format is used.
                      for example,using/testing dream teather-pull me under(from images and words)
                      128 = 7,55Mb
                      320 = 18,8Mb
                      but in the introduction of the music where only a guitar is playing you listen "too much more" harmonics in 320 than in 128.....when the drums and the remainders instruments start.....don't need to "say" what happens need?!?!
                      to compare we need songs with cool harmonics and "dream teather" is one example.

                      regards for all!
