Missing WMV2 and all other codecs!

I'm having a serious problem with my video playback right now.

I have no idea, but most of the videos I was able to watch are now unwatchable. I'm getting all kinds of error downloading codec messages.

Suddenly I'm missing WMV2, I can't play AVI, I'm missing some audio codecs. And these are all videos I was able to watch before on the very same computer.

So I try to download Windows Media Player 10, and all I get is more problems with WM10.

I don't know what caused it, but last night Norton Antivirus 2006 and I had to cancel the installation. Don't know if that had anything to do with it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Use WMP9, it's way better.

Try downloading FFDSHOW for the codecs.

Thanks, but unfortunately I'm still having the same problems.

I really don't get this, because the video was just fine a couple days ago.

Did you install or uninstall any programs since then, or make any major changes?

If you still remember the day you started having the problem, use System Restore to bring it back where before the problem happened.

          Regards

At most I tried to install Norton Antivirus 2006. and then I had to abort installation. then I upgraded to Windows Media Player thinking it would help me, but it didnt', so I rolled back, and re-installed Windows Media Player 9. Thats it otherwise.

Did you try installing the newest ffdshow? Google that for info.

Just to make sure I'm installing the plug-ins correctly, all I have to do is click setup and let it install right? Or do I have to do something specific before I install it?

Yeah I tried installing FFDshow, but it still didn't fix the problem unfortunately.

Hmmm, if you don't have any really important data, try backing up all your data on CD and DVDs, then reinstall Windows.

OR - do a Repair Install. I did this once for a similar problem and it worked. but you MAY have to reinstall your drivers.

I use the VLC player to play all my files, no codecs needed.
