problems with avi ( divx) movies

hi there, im new to this forum, so i thought id post my question straight away here...

i download many movies from kazaa.... their what they call dvd rips, so in divx format, but the file name is *.avi ..... right?

so many of them work and i watch them with no problems.
i have the latest windows media player, in windows xp prof.
the latest version of divx, which is 5.01 (?) if im not mistaken.

BUT: some movies wont play in WMP, and play in the divx player, or some wont play in the divx player but then it wont work in WMP... why is this? what can i do about it?

AND: some movies wont play well in either of them, i get a problem like that the divx player suddenly stops and shuts dow, or the sounds doesnt match the video, or the image is stuttering.....

what can i do about this all? i want to view my movies with not too many other codecs or players and all that crap installed, so just the divx player and WMP if thats possible...

Uninstall 5, and reinstall 3.11a, followed by 4.12 (Telling it not to play 3.11 contents). The latest codec 5 is 5 in name only. It still contains bugs that have plagued many users.

then what player should i use?

and, shouldnt i install and use the 5.* version...until there's a final version available?
