MPG Coversion to DVD Compatibility

Hi,
I have an MPG file movie and when I burn it to a DVD it will play on my computer but it will not play on a DVD player.

Is there a way to convert this MPG file so that I can burn it on a DVD and then watch it on a DVD player?

Hi JohnS,

You need to author DVD your .mpg file with programs such as TMPGEnc DVD Author or DVD-lab Pro. These tools come with free trial time for you to test

That software is a little expensive for the 2 or 3 video tapes that I want to put on DVD's.( cannot copy directly from tape to DVD because of copy protection. If I capture the tape to my computer with Dazzle software, the copy protection seems to be gone,)

I did manage to get a .m2v file of the movie I was working on, but when I burned it to a DVD, it played on my DVD player but there was no sound.

I guess i'll keep trying with the software I have.

I purchased Dazzle DVC 150 software about 3 years ago but it does not work as it's instructions say. I always had problems with the Dazzle software. I haven't used it for quite awhile because I was working with DVD's, DVD Shrink & DVD Decrypter.

.m2v file is video file only. Those programs I mentioned on the early post do come with free trials for 30 days. You can use the freewares such as VobEdit and IfoEdit to create .ifo files for DVD. Just follow the guide from the link below, rename your .mpg files to .vob files and begin the process from post #2

ben is right, that's a video stream only. you could have made a single mpg container as outlined in the guide. it is expensive, but well worth buying software. best of luck

Thanks for all of the information.
I'm still trying to get this stupid Dazzle software to work.
It is supposed to capture, produce and burn a DVD but it doesn't seem to work right. The instructions leave a lot to be desired.
After capturing, I tried to produce the file. Everything was set up to produce a MPEG ll file but I keep getting just a MPG file.
Like I said before, I only have 3 VHS tapes to put on DVD's. It would probably be less expensive to just go out and buy the DVD's.

No JohnS, you are confused about the file extension. A mpeg-2 file doesn't have .mpeg2 file extension. It should be a .mpg file extension

Hi Ben,

Just an update on my problem.

The captured files (mpg) that I got using Dazzle DVC 150 are actually mpeg 2 files.

They were too large to fit on one DVD-R disc.

I found Super MPEG 2 Transcoder at http://www.intercom.co.jp/english/transcoder/index.html
which has a 20 day trial period and this shrunk my mpeg 2 files to fit on one DVD-R disc.

This solved my problem.
