    help!...help...cannot playback dvds

    Hello,
I've upgraded my computer, Ive installed a new video card (Sapphire Atlantis
9600 PRO, 256 MG, not a great choice, I know); after installing the driver, when trying to play a dvd, my computer hangs. I've try using Power DVD 5, Intervideo; when using windows media player I get an error message about a problem with the dvd protection. If I'm uninstalling the video card playback of dvds is possible (compuder doesn't hangs, video quality being obviously low).
Bios is updated so are the drivers for the sound card and the video card. No conflicts are listed. I'm running XP pro SP2.

I would very much appreciate any help I can get solving this problem.

    Thank You!

Check in settings to see if you enable hardware acceleration; if you demand all work on CPU, probably playback is stuttered. If all work is on the GPU, instead, playback should be fine.

To see if there are problems with your graphic card try to do a test with the diagnostic tool of directX. Simply press the start button and select "Run".

Type DXDIAG and press return. Do all tests and see results.

        Thanks guys.

Gary, I've tried media player classic and it still hangs.

Geno, done that diagnostic stuff and it looks like video is ok; however the CPU goes at 100% usage and it stays there.
There is one driver I've downloaded from the Sapphire web site which is somehow working, meaning that the computer doesn't hang but sound is interrupted and overall computer speed is very low. As soon as I'm installing the ATI catalyst 6 whatever, problem starts but other than that computer
works very well. ATI said that there is nothing wrong with their chip or driver.

        Thanks.

          1. try playing with VLC

          2. make sure old drivers from previous card have been completely removed

          3. uninstall ATI drivers with the uninstall utility from their website

          4. try the omega drivers instead http://www.omegadrivers.net

          give full pc specs

Have you checked if video hardware acceleration is activated? In this way some workload should be removed from the CPU and charged on the GPU

Well, I’ve installed omega driver for ati after cleaning the computer with DC. Now it hangs when I’m trying to close powerDVD (CPU usage goes to 100%). During “playback”, the sound is choppy and the screen is updated every maybe five minutes or at all. Also, not sure if is OK, I’ve install the omega drivers over Catalyst 6 (I couldn’t
install them otherwise). I'll post full PC specs along with reports about device's memory/conflicts allocation.

                  Thanks for everybody’s input.
