Playback Problems

I have playback problems with avi's that gspot says I have codecs installed for. They just simply wont play. They are episodes of tv shows that I have missed and therefore downloaded. But with codec packs installed they are fine. But the longest my computer has ever gone without any spyware or viruses was 9 months, when I had no codec packs installed.

Are there any safe codec packs and what do I really need to have installed? At the moment I have xvid and ffdshow installed. Every avi I have should play according to gspot.

Can anyone help?
