codec/bitrate question

It seems as if there is a graduated increase in the time lag starting from the beginning to the end. At the beginning, it is only "off" just slightly, then it increases until at the end of the movie, its "off" about five seconds. Because this is the case, how will adjusting the ms delay fix it?Comment

I used the xvid codec for the video, and mp3 for the audio. Here were my mp3 parameters: 16-bit 32000 hz, 128 kbs.
The audio is the same length as the video. The source dvd is NTSC/Mpeg2/Dolby Digital 384kbs 48000 khz, framerate 23.976 hz.
My target xvid parameters were:
2-pass encoding,
enabled quarter pixel,
enable global motion compensation,
enable b-vops,
max consecutive bvops = 2,
quantitizer ratio = 1.50,
quantitizer offset = 1.00,
enable packed bitstream,
enable closed gov,
quantitzation type = h.263,
enable picture aspect ratio x:16 y:9,
start frame # = 0,
rate control - weight = 1.00,
enable chroma optimizer,
bvop sensitivity = 2,
motion search precision = 6 Ultra High,
VHQ Mode = 4 Wide Search,
disable turbo,
frame drop ratio = 0,
maximum i-frame interval = 300,
disable cartoon mode
quantitization:
minimum i-frame quantitizer = 1
maximum i-frame quantitizer = 31
minimum p-frame = 1
max p-frame = 31
min b-frame = 1
max b-frame = 31
enable trellis quantitization
fourcc = xvid
outputdebugstring = 0x0
disable deblocking y
disable deblocking uv
disable film effect
target bitrate = 553Comment

I think I've been missing something here. I've been using avs video converter (trial version) for both the audio and video. It does it automatically i think (but I can customize anything).
From this forum and others like it, I have heard of the following programs:
avisynth, staxrip, gordian knot, meGUI, AutoGK, FairUse Wizard, StaxRip, AVI.NET, vdubmod, virtualdub, avisynth, belight, besweet.
I don't know what any of these programs are. I downloaded avisynth, staxrip, gordian knot, megui, belight, and vituraldub, but I don't know how to use them. I don't know which one I should use, for what, and how to use it. I don't know how to use avisynth. I'm sure there's other forums that explains how to use them. But can you provide me with some quick help so I can figure all this stuff out? It's really confusing, because I downloaded (i think) staxrip, and when I tried to use it, it told me that it needed all this other stuff (codecs, external programs and all kinds of junk). It seems that within the opensource video community, all the progs need all this extra stuff to work. megui wasn't compatible with avi's or vob's. I couldn't figure anything out. Can someone explain it to me?Comment
