    which codec

    how do i know which codec i need? The file type is .mp3 and i'm using windwos media player 10.

    this is an audio file? if so i don't think you need any.

      its an mp3 (MP3 Audio File) is what it says in properties, i took this screen

        Windows comes with an mpa parser and mp3 decoder. If you can't play it then either it isn't an mp3 or your system is stuffed. Have you been installing codec packs?

          ok lets say i have a movie that needs the ac3 codec installed can i get this from k-lite codec pack, are their diff. types of ac3 codecs and if so how do i install it to the video. do the diff. codecs programs scan the movie u want it installed and put it where i belongs, basically a one click method

            You don't need a codec for playback, just a decoder and k-lite would include AC3Filter and ffdshow, both of which can decode AC3. I would suggest that you avoid codec packs though.
