    Making .mkv into?

I have a DVD player that will play just about anything I have on a CD or DVD but not knowing much about .mkv I'd like to try to make it into something else. Perhaps avi or mpg. Any suggestions?

depends what the mkv file contains-- if they're compliant (with your standalone) streams, say mpeg4 asp with mp3 audio you're fine to extract & mux to avi with mkvextractGUI/avi-mux GUI. otherwise it'll need encoding, in which case you might to take a look at mediacoder

      Hmm, it's a non-anime movie.

Perhaps I haven't explained very well. I'm in the process of dling a movie. One that is a mkv file. As mentioned before one of my dvd players can play video files depending on the format. Certain mpg and VCD seem to work best. My question is after the dl is finished, I need suggestions on programs to use to possibly change the file from mkv to VCD.
