Analyze / Identify audio (mp3) codec?

I have some mp3 files but when I try to play them in Win Media Player 9 or Roxio's Audio central I get the error msg "unrecognized format".

I'm quite sure the mp3 files are OK so they must be protected? or there's some issue with the audio codec, or something... All my other mp3's play OK - so it's something specific about these mp3's.

Any ideas on what to try in order to play these mp3's?

Is there some utility program that can analyze and identfythe mp3 files to determine the internal file parameters, what codec is required, etc?

i'm not-- if an mp3 codec can't decode it, it's not an mp3. it may be another audio format with the wrong extension. try playing with VLC or media player classic

    or open it in mediainfo

      OK thanks.

I tried playing the 01-01.mp3 file in VLC (ver 0.8.5) and it also gives an 'unrecognized format' error.

When I ry to lay the file in Media Player Classic it immediately crashes/terminates.

MediaInfo reports only the file name and size but doesn't show anything under Format or Audio Codecs.

No sense taking the easy way out <grin>.

I ran the mp3 file through GSot and it said the following codec was bad -
            C:\windows\system32\1mpgspl.ax
            ligos MPEG Splitter

            - and the codec has been disabled.

Does this suggest that it actually is some (strange?) variant of an mp3?

            Can I update/replace this codec?

unfortunately the only way out. media player classic and VLC both have the necessary internal filters, both of which should be able to play this file.
