Slow Divx and DVD playback

This just came out of nowhere. Everything ran fine until a couple days ago, and the only thing I remember installing since then was ParaWorld. Checked for the venerable "PIO" mode, and everything is running fine. Movies are just choppy, and I know my system is well above specs so what gives? The best part is I just got a 22" widescreen LCD and I can't even watch movies now.
Please help. Cheers.

Specs are as follows,

Pentium M 1.73Ghz
512 Mb DDR
ATi Mobility Radeon 9600
WinXP SP2
All the latest video codecs.

a system restore would be a quick fix. otherwise try playing a DVD with VLC or media player classic, update video drivers

find out your graphics card model first, then google. you can find out through control panel-->display-->settings
