    mpeg2 -> VOB

    I've been making mpeg2 files using a hardware capture card and they work great, but can only be an hour long. I have an ATI all in wonder card and the player supports playback of VOB files, so how can I join multiple mpeg2 files together into a vob file? there has to be an easier way than creating a DVD and then ripping it back

    You can join them together in TMPGEnc as follows:

    File>>MPEGTools>>Merge&Cut

    Set mode to "plain vanilla" MPEG2 (NOT "MPEG2-SuperVideoCD")

    A .VOB file is merely a type of MPEG2 file. there is no need to change the extension from .mpg (or .mpeg) to .vob.

    Let us know of your success ;>}

      sadly that doesn't work, if I attempt to join the 2 mpeg files together they exceed the 2gig file limit, only vob files can do this it seems

        If what you say is correct (although I don't think so), you can change the extensions to .VOB and use VobMerger to join the files (Win98 limit is DEFINITELY 4 Gigs for this)...

          hmmmm my understanding here was that although the encoding in mpeg2 and VOB is the same the headers are different, things such as filesize in mpeg2 was limited to 4 bytes hence the 2gig file limit, VOB only being different in that it had the bigger offset and lengths so to convert from one type to the other didn't require encoding just rewriting, this from the makers of the hardware encoder I use. Hence the reason for me asking for a way to convert to VOB.

          I'm currently trying with the latest version of tmpgenc, and also using sonic dvdit to make a dvd(folder) to get the vob files which I'll then join, I'll let you know
