    Retail DivX CD Acquired

I have acquired a retail CD that says DivX on the case. I'm not familar with Divx, and when I try playing the CD on my PC's DVD is says I dont have a DivX supported DVD. I can I play this CD, or is it useless? Thanks.

That does not make sense. What are the contents of the CD? Are there AVI files in there, or a jumble of different files like those found in VCDs?

You've probably obtained an "ancient" Circuit City Divx - which despite the virtually identical name, has absolutely NOTHING in common with the .AVI files that are compressed using DivX codecs from version 3.11alpha through v.5.01.

      Essentially, you own a coaster...

        RE: Retail DivX CD

The contents are made up of 4 folders:
        ECCTRANA
        ECCTRANB
        VIDEO_TS
        ZOOM
The ECCTRANA & B folders have each 2 .fil files.
The VIDEO_TS has 3 .bup and 1 .vob file.
The ZOOM has 25 or more .jar and 2 .fil files.
The largest amount of content are in the ZOOM folder.
        The .vob is only 2MB.
Thanks for any help. Can't say I ever heard of any Circuit City DivX movies. I don't see any markings from the case to determine where it may have came from. It has a DivX trademark. And in bold letters "When new, this disc includes one limited viewing period. A registered DivX-featured DVD player is required for use".

That sounds just like the format Setarip indicated.

DivX was originally like a dvd that you rent and after a certin number of viewings it would be no longer playable. Like a rentable movie you dont haveto return. It never really took off but i think thats what you have.

God I hate it when people confuse the two. DIVX is the home-video format that bombed. DivX is the codec that has blessed us all with small size high quality movies. I suggest that you use the proper spelling and tell others to use it too. For the codec it's DivX or DivX while the crappy rental is DIVX or Divx.

                Thanks

Thanks for all the help. As I said in my original post, I know nothing of DivX or DIVX for those that have trouble reading. Once agai, I appreciate all the help.

I would browse to the video_ts directory and try select that .vob file and right click open in [your dvd player software]
