I have recently purchased an archos 504 and am converting dvd to avi (conversion to wmv takes many hours). Does anyone know of a good (and free) programme to convert dvd to avi?

Most of them are only video converters that convert vob to avi format. You can't convert that dvd if it is encrypted. In that case, you need to find another software to help you.
Hanbrake is able to rip DVDs to mp4 format, if you don't insist on AVI format.
also, you can try wondershare dvd ripper platinum to help you convert protected DVDs into avi format.Comment
