MPEG 1 Layer 3 audio encoded .avi files fix

Posting this for benefit of mankind...

I had a problem as many do with playback of .avi files that use the MPEG 1 Layer 3 (aka "MP3") audio encoding-- after burning to DVD, problem was I got the picture, but no sound. Installed numerous codec packs and even found the single codec for it, installed it, still got no sound (was using Nero 7 Ultra and ImgBurn). Third Google-pass at the problem yielded a link to the Total Movie Converter, nagware yes, but it worked like a charm. I pointed it to the problem .avi with this evil MPEG-1 - Layer 3 audio encoding and converted it to an MPEG-1 file. Used GSpot to determine the new audio encoding and it had been converted to MPEG 1 - Layer 2. I then tried burning it again to DVD and lo, the sound was there.

I stay away from codec packs in general, use ffdshow, it works wonders

Dvd flick is freeware, I did have a recent sound synch problem with a test conversion but it was a problematic avi that I never should have bothered with.

Nero vision has a lot more problems with sound issues
