Converting dvd to mpeg etc?

Greetings

I have a home made DVD that i want to convert into files that is usuable on Windows movie maker and youtube

Ive tried download a few free conversion programs but cant figure out what im doing wrong when converting them to mpeg.The audio is all good but there is no image when i watch them

Could anyone help out by posting a few simple step by step instructions.That would be much appreciated

Just to add

the files on this DVD are in VTS format what ever that means

All the VOBs are already MPEG2. Just change the extension from VOB to MPG.

Well i managed to change the format of the files to mpeg but windows movie maker still wont accept them for some reason

As soon as i try to edit the video i get a error message and it shuts down.Can you reccomend any free programs that can do what Windows movie maker can do.But nothing dodgy like TMPG,tried it and managed to creat what i wanted but then discovered i had to have that writting smack in the center of it

Editing a Football highlight tape

I'm trying to do about the same thing with some football tapes that are in vob format. What can I use to convert them to a format that I can edit with video Wave 4 or Windows Movie maker, and what format would be best to use.
