Is it important which software to capture?

from (entry level) MiniDV camcorder CanonZR40 NTSC?
I started with Windows Movie Maker, which is great for fast cutting/pasting, etc. Then I discovered VirtualDub, which is great for correcting color, etc. And I recently found WinDV, which is plain simple.
Is there a difference in the quality of captured video? Any recommendations? No program that I'm aware of (free or not too expensive) offers everything, so I'll have to use several of them anyway, but capturing is a fundamental step, so I don't want to mess it up, and discover an issue in e.g. 2 years.

Capturing DV-AVI to PC is basically a transfer of the video from cam to PC via firewire. There shouldn't be any difference depending on capture software. I find WinDV pretty no-nonsense and effective. The postprocessing of video is entirely another matter and ofcourse that will vary from software to software.

I wonder is there a way to capture titles in 30 minutes chunks as mpeg2 via firewire converting on the fly and save some wasted time?

a 1 gig vob would be a lot more efficient to work with

DV-AVI is better for editing than MPEGs, the experts say.
