Okay, I am obviously missing something. Can you fill in the gap for me, you said DVD and DV-AVI are entirely different things. Am I changing from one to the other when burning to DVD?

I transfer it to my computer as DV-AVI format to maintain quality. Then it is about 12-14GB in size. I want to put it on a DVD for ease of use (they are 4.7 or 8.5 GB DL). I use something like DVD Flick to burn it to DVD. Does it change file formats "in" DVD Flick? Are my 4.7GB DVDs large enough, or do I need to get the 8.5 DL?

I would like to edit some of them. I believe you mentioned earlier that DVD Flick couldn't edit. I would then need something like Ulead Video Studio (not free) correct?

You are doing fine. DVDFlick is converting(or encoding) the DV-AVI to DVD. Since DVD is much more compressed than DV-AVI, the SL DVD will be enough to contain a good quality video of about 2 hours.
And yes, for editing you will need something like UVS. It can also produce the DVD. If you use UVS, there is no need for Flick.

You refer to turning everything off while transfering and burning video, including firewalls and such. Is there a one button approach to do that or do I just go thru and right click all the things in the task bar and close them?

Open Task Manager. Kill all processes that are not used by System.

Okay, so far so good! I have transfered 8 tapes and made 4 DVDs. Image looks good, menus are working, DVDs are playing on TV ... Unless some unexpected problems comes up, I think I am set to transfer all my Hi8 to DVD. Thank you for your help and advice. It is very appreciated. I may be back with more questions at a later date, because after I finish the Hi8s I am starting on VHS. We'll see how all goes. Aubrey
