Divx Player 2.0 alpha doesn't work

I download the divx 502 bundle, from divx.com, installing only the divx player (KHP said it was possible to view divx 5 content by installing only the player and not the codec)

I recieve the error that the divx player has performed an "illegal operation", I would appreicate your help. I'm running Windows 98 se.
This is the error message, perhpas someone can make sense of it all:

    Sorry

I guess I should have tested this myself, before makeing such a bold statement.

According to Bez at divx.com, the divx player has it's own inbuild divx5 decoder. I assumed this to mean that the divx player would be able to play divx files without the codec present on the system.

I have never used the divx player myself.

I aplogize any inconvenience I may have caused.

KHP, I've been spreading the same news, so if anything, we're both in for it

Well I think this could be "my problem" because even after installing the divx 5.02 codec, the player will not run. If you get the chance you might want to check it out. Do you have any idea about the error I'm recieving?

I seem to be experiencing another problem, I downloaded some divx 5.xx compressed content, the media's framerate seems rather low in WMP 6.4, and I can't fastforward. I can view it fine in virtualdub, however.

      Two questions then:
      1) is there anyway to view media fullscreen in virtualdub
      2) can I solve the problem by re-encoding to divx 3.11 alpha?

      Thanks in advance

I have done some quick testing on my system.

        1. Uninstalled divx codec and player.
Checked that playback didn't work in both wmp and vdub.

        2. Installed divx player without codec.
Playback worked in divx player, but not in wmp, as expected.

        3. Installed divx5.02 codec again.
        Everything apper to work again.

I don't have a clue what might be causing you problems, the only divx5 playback issue I can think of, is that opening files in full screen mode will cause an error in the divx player 2.0.

In wmp I would suggest turning off all postprocessing, enable extended overlay, disable smooth playback, extended Yuv and double buffering.

If this doesn't work, reencoding might be your only option .

AFAIK vdub can't do full screen playback, I think there is an option for 200% zoom somewhere, but vdub was never really intended for playback.

I recieve this error, when I double click on the divx alpha player 2 icon. I will definately, follow your advice, and I'll post my results, thanks for your time KHP

Where would I find these options in WMP 6.4:

          enable extended overlay,
          disable smooth playback,
          extended Yuv and double buffering.

In the divx decoder filter properties, there are three tabs, post processing, quality settings and a 'help page'. The extended overlay and other settings are in the quality settings tab.

Enabling extended overlay, means using hardware overlay instead of software, which should lower the cpu load by about 10-15%.

Thanks, it dramatically improved quality in one clip, however I will re-try the problematic clips again, thanks a bunch
