Picture Quality From Indoors & Outdoors

When I film outdoors with my camcorder, I'm not that pleased with the picture quality when it's on DVD. It looks as if about 10% of the digital quality was taken out but when I film indoors the picture quality is perfect. Why is this? Am I right that the reason for this is because when I'm indoors things are nearer to my camcorder that give me perfect picture quality and because of the outdoors where things are further away, the outdoor distance controls the picture quality by downgrading it a little?

I checked a film of mine that I made in the outdoors and parts of it with long shots are not so good and close-ups look better. Indoor shots look DVD quality.

That is because 99% of camcorders do not have depth of field like a 35mm camera. Closeups look fine and objects in the distance don't. Look kind of fuzzy, right?

Sometimes I do get the filming going blurry but that mostly happens when I zoon-up on something moving. I hate Auto Focus because it controls itself without me getting a warning and it damamges a shot. For example, I was at the beach the other week and I saw a boat moving so I set my camcorder on the tripod on the beach and I aimed a distance ahead of the boat so that I catch it on time and the focus was fine. As soon as the boat went past my camcorder it went out of focus and that shot was ruined. The same happenes when I film aircrafts. I tried other settings in my camcorder such as Sport because I thought maybe Sport is for filming fast-moving things.

What my main question was all about was, when I film outdoors where I'm filming things quite a distance the quality looks like VHS and not DVD. When I film indoors where things are closer I get DVD quality. I checked through some footage that I filmed recently where I filmed things close-up outdoors and I had DVD quality. I don't know why long-distant shots outdors appear to be VHS-looking. When I say, VHS, I don't mean exactly like VHS, I mean partly like that. When I looked at some footage when I filmed at a beach, the pebbles looked slightly blurred, the waves from the sea appeared to be the same. The pebbles and waves were about sixty feet away from me when I was filming. I'm not filming with LP, I know that can cause blurry quality. I'm filming with HQ.

I have the JVC GR-D850. I experience the same problem. No depth of field. Things far away are not clear and sharp, but things close up are. I dont know if there is a fix for this or not.

Sorry to know you have the same problem. I have wondered if a telescopic lense might fix this but those lenses are expensive. That might not fix the out-of-focus part, though. When I ask Sony about mine they don't seem to know. They tell me my camcorder sounds faulty and I know that isn't it. I've used other camcorders and had the same and you told me you have the same problem. It's amazing the people that made my camcorder don't know the answer. It's like finding out Willy Wonka doesn't know a thing about chocolate.

Ok, I did some experimenting and tried this combination. I purchased some Sony Color Collection DV's. Put one in my JVC and set the camcorder to manual. Went outside and took some footage. Went back and processed the DV to DVD and it looks 100% better.

My guess is all DV tapes are not created equal. Have been using Maxell. No More. Sony's for me.
