    No .avi file???

    Hello,

I've just downloaded a movie but when I try to play it all mediaplayers (Windows mediaplayer, DivX Player, Micro DVD player, Radlight and Intervideo WinDVD) say "... no .avi file", "file format unknown" etc.
The extension of the file is normal: .avi and it has a filesize of 717 Mb also normal I think. I can't use divfix or Virtual dub because they also don't reconize the file. What else can I do???

What is the error message produced by Virtualdub? I would hazard that you don't have the appropriate codec installed, which is likely to be the DivX codec.

It is a different file format then, though I have no idea what it is. It could be Quicktime, Realvideo or something else. Try the Quicktime player, Realplayer, Vivo or whatever other-format-player that you know of.

Load the file into Virtualdub post any errors or prompts you are confronted with, as well as the "file information."

                error-reports

                VirtualDub:
Cannot determine file type of "C:\program files\KaZaA\My Shared Folder\Panic.Room(2002).ViTE.ShareReactor.avi" the program doesný load the movie so i can't get any movie informtion from VD.

                DivFix > Ckeck Errors >
"This is not an AVI file."

I have renamed the file to .mpg .mpeg .divx .vcd .mov .mp4 but no result!?

I think I'm going to delete the file, TOO BAD

                Has anyone a last solution?

                  1) do a simple reboot
                  2) try divx alpha player

                      Sounds like a fake...

But just to check you might try compressing it with winzip or any other file compression tool. If it compresses better than 20% it is cirtainly fake.

When I pack the file with WinRAR it has only a pack ratio of 99%, the original file has a size of 700 MB the packed version has a size of 698 MB, so it doesn't look like a fake!?

I don't have any fake .avi file for me to test this out, but I've tried using Virtualdub to open .rm, .qt and .mov files (Can't be bothered to retrieve the .viv files I've stored away on CDs), and got exactly the same error as you did. This led me to the conclusion that the file that you have is in a format that VD (and hence the usual crop of media players) does not support. What the format is, I have no idea how to determine, so you will have to try out every single players (that play the non-avi and -non-mpg formats) available out there.

                            Might be an MPEG2 file.
Just try to rename it to .mpg and play it like it was an mpeg2 file.

Experienced the same thing with a file that should be a MIB2 avi file. Turned out te be a mpeg2 file (Spiderman CD2)

                            Good luck !
