I think Danny should print out this entire thread and put it away in a safe deposit box. Then when he has a son or daughter that is about 14-15 years old and he is trying to have a similar conversation, desparately wanting to prove to his child the he was once young too and thought he knew everything, he will actually have the proof to show.

DRF, I think that you may have thought yourself to be on as equal a footing as the adults here. This is the illusion offered by the internet and the forum/chatroom experience. In a way it is good for the exchange of ideas where they can be offered on their own merits, but if one does not realize the nature of the medium then one gets caught in the illusion. Blu, I and a few other members have suggested that as well. There has also been suggestion to DRF to show this thread to his folks as it is, unedited. From what DRF posted, that has not happend yet.

I believe that you (DRF) is the one that is assuming, and not your parents.

Look, no one is suggesting you lock yourself into a room, strap yourself into a chair and build a brick wall around you to protect yourself, nor are your parents wanting to do that. What all of us here are attempting to do is simply advise you based on what we all have lived through, seen and heard of, and perhaps even have had a family memeber or friend actually go through a tragic event in their lives, and trying to tell you that anything can happen at any time, anywhere, no matter what you might think.

You can take the advise and learn from it, or simply ignore it and take your chances based on what you know of the world. 15yrs is nothing, a drop in the bucket. If it helps, I too was stubborn and thought nothing could touch me or harm me at that age. I even had a few very bad arguments with my parents about things. I too thought I knew it all. Till one day it all blew up in my face. I wont get into details, but it took a devistating event for me to "wake up and get off my cloud" and realize what my folks were trying to do.

Lets just say I learned a very very valuable lesson that day....and that lesson was to heed warnings and take to heart advise my folks were giving. Because they were EXACTLY CORRECT! Its just a shame I had to learn it the hard way.

I hope that you DRF NEVER have to learn these lessons the hard way. Heed the advise and guidance you get from your parents and from the members here at the forum before something devistating happens to you.

Another thought on IRC.

I consider chatrooms like "forums in real time". You have your server, like the main forum, (say a server like irchighway is like DVF as a whole.)
You have to join a channel in order to do anything, that's like a specific thread. They even have topics so you know what the channel deals with.

Another thing, Sure the common servers can be dangerous. The ones I go on are media-based, the people who tape cartoons off the air every week and then release AVIs. The thing about good IRC servers are they are not advertised everywhere. It's like AIM screennames, you have to know someone who is on that specific server in order to know about it.

Thus such sex offenders can't just google "places to find drfsupercenter online" and join the server. They would have to ask someone who is already on it, and if they don't know about the server it's a giant catch-22.
Some of the servers are owned by users on the larger servers, the media ones. So you would have to find about the big server and then the small one.

It's not like myspace where you can just pull up any person's page.

Well my parents once approved of one chatroom I was on. I just don't wanna introduce more of them.

It's no wonder most of the people on IRC are college students, because then they finally break free of their parents
