    @katz- I guess I just can't make up my mind My old PIII will be for my grandson Lil Danny to play with, the laptop is for surfing from the family room, the AMD 1500+ will probably go to one of my daughters for an upgrade and the San Diego and Brisbane builds are my new toys

    @Chewy - Yeah, I gotta make room down the basement for the new boxes. I thought about one of them KVM thingies but ya can almost build a new box for what they cost. But they are nice to get rid of all the monitors LOL

            will it reboot or shutdown the computer remotely?

              of course it does

              you will use start => shutdown just like you normally will

              apart from that it'll let you send "ctrl+alt+del" or "ctrl+esc"
              you can also transfer files with inbuilt routines

              you can access your running ultravnc server even via any webbrowser without having to use an installed vnc viewer - very handy when staying at friends places and being in need of a special file

              in case anyone is interested: UltraVNC is freeware and you can get it here:
              click

                of course it does
                windows remote desktop doesn't, except with some funky tricks, that figures

                thanks UncasMS

                  give it a try - you might like it

                  keep in mind to provide different ports for any vnc installation controlling a pc and make sure the router will forward the corresponding port to that very machine

                    @UncasMS - this sounds like a solution to my space probem. How many PCs to a monitor or is it unlimited?

                      it is not limited afaik

                      but because you will have to tell the client/viewer which server to connect to every ultranvcserver needs its own port to be addressed properly

                      e.g.
                      pc1 => 192.168.0.2:4711 + 192.168.0.1:4712
                      pc2 => 192.168.0.3:5711 + 192.160.0.3:5712

                      the first port 4711 or 5711 will be used to connect to pc1/2 via the ultravnc client and port number two on that machine 4712 or 5712 will be the port to access pc1/2 via webinterface

                      so please make sure to allocate two different port per vnc when installing each client and different ports again for the next machine/copy of vnc

                      and then keep in mind that maybe you want to remote control any or a couple of your machines:
                      use dyndns or a similar service and create port forwarding rules in your router like "allow service tcp 4711,4712" to be send to "lan server 192.168.0.2"

                      this way you may access an address like "jm1647.dyndns.org:4712" via a webbrowser from any place you like and end at your router first which then should forward the request on port 4712 (which is the port for web based access not vnc client) to machine number 1 / 192.168.0.2

                      hope you get the idea

                        @UncasMS - I think I understand it, now thats scary Thanks for the info and I know where to find ya if additional help is needed.

                        Gonna be a while before I try the VNC thing. I didn't even do anything with the Brisbane build this weekend
