that's a lot of memory/ram in use

have you tried cleaning the drive, that's a pretty old drive

You may hvae a bad blank disk. Change to Verbatims or Taiyo Yudens.

i have burned easily 20 (with at least 10 being from this stack) discs in the past week with this drive with no problems, this happened after defraging, so i am wondering if the two may be related. it's definitely not the media.

i have also not tried burning at 4x, because i want to trace the route of the problem before i waste another disc. i believe the speed the lead-out (and lead-in) are written at are independent of the user selected write speed, so that should be irrelevant (again, the burn is perfect. 100% good across the board on a surface scan, and the buffer never dropped on the recorder or disk below 98% during writing.)

i have a stack of TYG02s here as well (genuine; rima.com) which are inferior to the SONYD21s and MCC004s imo. i have also used hundreds of MCC004s of which the SONYD21s are about on par with (as some of the best +r media imo.)

again, since this happened immediately after defraging, and i've burned quite a few from this stack already with 0 problems, i believe this is something other than media (and very doubtful on it being hardware related.)

i will try to access another computer tomorrow which i can scan with. i have run quality scans with this drive before and they are not remotely accurate (down right wrong is more like like it on PIE/PIF scans.) i have scanned the same discs though burned with this drive on other drives and gotten excellent (disc quality: 98-100) scans. it's a fine writer, but a bad scanner.

If you say you have a stack of TYG02's there, why not try burning onto one of those instead?

There's nothing to blame here except the hardware/media. Nothing else even comes into it.

In any case, you've had the drive for 2+ years, I'd say that it's had a pretty good innings.

They're about Â£20 now, just buy a new one with the money you'll save by not wasting discs!

despite running 2 defrag passes with PerfectDisk, the problem was due to fragmentation of the files i was burning.

i deleted the files, ran another defrag pass with aggressive free space consolidation, ripped again, and burned with no problems.

also, is there a way to make ImgBurn's buffer as effective as Nero's?

with Nero, i can lightly multi-task (internet browser, instant messenger, calculator, notepad, explorer, other light apps...) with no buffer drop.

with ImgBurn, i can't even open notepad or Firefox without the buffer dropping and the burn failing (tried various burn priorities; no change in result.)

the primary problem wasn't as much fragmentation as you running out of space on your hard drive(my experience), I might have 6-7 gigs free space but it's not contiguous and whatever program will fragment the files in such a way that's reading them is entirely hit or miss

imgburn is less resource intensive than nero, task manager will verify

buffer readings are not always indicative of a problem

opening and running light apps while burning with Nero literally causes no drop in buffer for me, and a burn that verifies and scans perfectly.

opening even a single light app while burning with ImgBurn causes a complete drop in buffer and a failed burn.

... this is why i ask...

My machine does a million and one things whilst I'm doing all the burning tests and programming ImgBurn. Multitasking is not an issue.

I can also pause the burn for half an hour, start it back up again and I'll still get a perfect scan.

with the unpredictability of the errors (failed lead-in, failed lead-out, failed to synchronize cache, I/O errors, mediocre burns, or just plain bad or failed burns) i've been getting, even at low speeds, on genuine TYG02 and SONYD21 media, i'm convinced now that it is the drive on its way out as suggested.

Lite-On LH-20A1H should be here in a day or two...

I have a very similar issue.

Some but not all of my disc's burned with Imgburn will fail on the Initial finalization. The next finalization pass will always succeeds. Problem is that the disc will play in a software player but not a stand alone player.

I too have a copy of perfect disc that is set to run on a weekly basis. Its hard for me to believe that a defrag program would cause problems with a burning program but it might be more then happenstance.

The system is a new build with more than enough free disc space. The burner is new and has no issues with other burning software. Most of you will recognize the media code. I thought it might have been a bad batch. But I just broke open a new cake and had the same issue. I have tried reloading Imgburn but that does not help.

Any Suggestions would be welcome!

As you can see this is more then one operation from Imgburn. I thought that it could be a heat issue in this case, but I have had the same failures with only one burn.

Found 3 DVD-ROMs

Hmmmmmmmm, with older dvd burners I can burn that mid easily at 8x all day long in about 8-9 minutes, 6-7 minutes at 16x

you took 31 minutes, why build an iso and save to the hard drive, imgburn will do that on the fly and burn????????????

I wonder what kind of a driver mess you might have also with that sata dvd burner?
