Smartbuy DVD+R 8x, PRODISC R03.
Purchased from local dealer when I didn't know any better, he said it was good media, HA!
Needless to say they are being ripped and burned to TY02!

I goofed and forgot to reset my write speed in Imgburn for some new to me TY 8X +R's, they burned at 14X in my NEC....here are the results.

After scanning first using CD/DVD Speed I thought, hey these aren't so bad, then I fired up DVDInfoPro to see what it had to say...ouch. My question is why the results from CD/DVD Speed are so different from that of DVDInfoPro? I know they probably use a different method of scanning, but you would think they would at least show similar results.

Afraid not discman. While the disk can be read now (PIFs low and no POFs), it's high PIE count near the outer edge indicates not only a (huge) lack of compliance with OSTA/ECMA but also an accident waiting to happen in a year or so, as the media degrades and the ECC blocks go ker-flooie.

Reburn it on a Verbatim or a TY - unless you only want to watch it once or twice.

This illustrates the danger of relying on a simple quality score algorithm - either Ner0's or someone else's. Rely only on the ECMA standard.

I am betting his burner undereports PIF's also, it looks like the disk was burned at higher speed judging from the graph.

yeah fellas i get what your saying here but my burner hates verbs.memorex have given me consistancy were other brands have not.hopefully when i get round to fitting my benq 1650 i will go back to higher grade media.but you have to admitt its still a tiny bit impressive.

The basic standard is this. To be compliant:

1. No consecutive set of 8 blocks (sectors) should have a total of more than 280 PIEs. Clearly, discman's disk does not comply and should not have got a "95" (in fact, it looks like it does not comply at most points on the disk's surface)

2. No block should have more than 4 PIFs.

3. Of course any single POF (better known as a CRC error) makes the disk kerfcuked anyway.

from what I have read, the max pie value is what should not exceed 280,
his was 197(which will increase with age)
