I think you'd be suprised at what actually goes on in IRC, there is help and idle banter. More chit chat than help...it's more of a place where the regulars hang and have a good time, so as not to be slapped on the wrists by blu for doing it in the open forum. When the infrequent noob stumbles in help is given and everyone is on their way.
As for abandoning the search function of the site, most new users won't know how to access the IRC without doing a little searching in the first place. The forum wouldn't suffer at all, posts would still be made....it's not like the site will be abandoned because of IRC.
My 2 cents.

She's going down to the devil, down down to 90 degrees.

I've removed MSN from my profile as I've had some people bugger me for advice...also removed it from my puter as I never really liked it. I can be found on Skype about anytime though....not many people use that service.

I agree with locoeng, a IRC chat room would not pull away users of the forum at all. In fact, a IRC chat room can and will promote the forum.
A good example of that would be the Anomalies Network forum. When they put up a IRC room, it became a catalyst that helped bring in new forum members each day. Eventually, both the forum and IRC channel promoted each other, giving them both a boost and increased exposure.
Just a wild idea, tho I know it would work since I actually did it for the Anomalies Network which then became my proprietary operation, but an internet radio station focusing on DVD formats, backups, etc might also help promote both an IRC channel and the forum.
My station was called "Zero-Point-Radio", and hosted many programs related to paranormal, space exploration and some technical related shows all created by listeners. It was also home to a couple of well known programs like Clyde Lewis's "Ground Zero" and Lou Gentile's weekly radio show. It promoted both the forum and IRC channel, and increased the membership and exposure incredibly well.
All I want is for people to post in the forum. I still get questions via PM that could easily be placed in the forum where others can learn via the search function.
