I decided against the Toshiba, because the box mentioned only DVD-R (I'm a +R kinda guy) and I didn't want to take any chances.
So, believe it or not, I picked up another Sony, which was $79.
I can't believe the difference between my semi-old unit and the new ones, heft-wise. I swear it weighs mere ounces - I'm afraid to push a button lest I knock the thing off the shelf. The older one seems so much sturdier.

The small footprint and low height, as well as the reduced weight are nothing short of amazing.
"Of course, it cost three times as much."
This too is merely a factor of the continued advance of technology. The first SONY DVD player I purchased cost me $899. The most recent SONY cost me $89 - and has more functions and capabilities ;>}
