    I'd try a ReWritable or two if you haven't already. Cheaper than even a Toshiba!

      That's not a bad idea, however...

      Suppose I find a RW that works fine - that doesn't mean that a non-RW of the same brand will work the same.

      Is TDK considered a reliable brand of DVD+R? (I know it depends on a lot of variables, but in general).

      Maybe I'll just try a couple/three different brands of discs.

      Why can't things ever be easy???

        Easy? you want easy?!? if it was, none of us would be here!

        You're right about the RW not proving the R will work but it might confirm reliability of your player enough to persevere with alternative media.

          BREAKING NEWS!

          I picked up a new player, hooked 'er up, and it plays all of the discs I've burned.

          So it seems I'm good to go (until the next crisis).

          Thanks to all for your help.

          Now, if I can just get my garage door opener working right...

              Congratulations on resolving the dilemma!

              May your new Toshiba (or did you get two for $98) serve you well ;>}

                I decided against the Toshiba, because the box mentioned only DVD-R (I'm a +R kinda guy) and I didn't want to take any chances.

                So, believe it or not, I picked up another Sony, which was $79.

                I can't believe the difference between my semi-old unit and the new ones, heft-wise. I swear it weighs mere ounces - I'm afraid to push a button lest I knock the thing off the shelf. The older one seems so much sturdier.

                Of course, it cost three times as much.

                  The small footprint and low height, as well as the reduced weight are nothing short of amazing.

                  This too is merely a factor of the continued advance of technology. The first SONY DVD player I purchased cost me $899. The most recent SONY cost me $89 - and has more functions and capabilities ;>}

                  Enjoy!

                    Similarly, I remember paying $97 for 2MB of RAM (which doubled my existing 2MB).

                    It doesn't seem all that long ago, either.
