New CPU/Mboard,? OP System for svcd?

    Hi'
I intend to upgrade from a PII 266 to something a bit faster so I can do more than one svcd a week.
I will try an athlon 2.4 or similar and was thinking of an asus MB to presumably work well with my asus v7100 delux combo graphics/capture card.

Do I really need to change from Windows 98se as I believe that the Seattle mafia will not allow XP to be also used on the museum piece I intend to assemble from all my old upgrade left-overs which will now make up an entire PC.

    Any ideas please?

PS would 256 mb of memory be sufficient?

Not if you're building your own system...

      Thanks again Setarip,
Am I likely to encounter any incompatibilities using old software with new hardware?
I have never changed motherboards before, do they come with reasonable documentation and start-up disks?
Sorry if this is too obvious.

make yourself familiar with ALL neccessary steps before you even think about unpacking your new hardware!

search the net for guides on this and take particular care when mounting the heatsink!

if you have never done this before, chances are you'll ruin your new cpu.

maybe you better get some help from someone familiar with this.

            Thanks UncasMS
I had my old 486 in pieces a few times so maybe I'm too confident. I'll probably go ahead carefully, buying from an electronics shop so I can ask all the right questions. Will check out the mag's and the net.

PS Does the heatsink need a thermal paste or does it go on dry?

i'd always use GOOD thermal paste but please be VERY careful with your cpu's die!

breaking the edges of the cpu happens faster than you might think.

make sure to put the heatsink on the cpu without tilting or you might break smallest pieces of the edge which can render the cpu useless.

                Thank you UncasMS
Is this best done with the cpu on the MB?
