same quality maybe, but i have seen by many rips i have done that the divx 5 codec is not 'fully' stable as sometimes it freezes the picture in high action scenes (this is non-hardware dependent cos i tested it on an amd1.6ghz, 512mb ddr ram, geforce3 etc...). however on the same spec using the divx3.11 codec their is no freezing. So overall i would say techno's right in saying div3.11 is better, but divx 5.02 is better for the beginner user.

I haven't noticed that... but if you say so I belive it...
And I always use divx 3.11... like it the best...

        @ hacker

what exactly did happen, wehn you talk about freezing?

        did the movie freeze?
did the picture freeze and sound went on?
        did your system freeze?

do you by chance have *smooth playback* activated in your divx5 options?

        if so, disable it!

        @ all

using the right routines/settings handling nandubs sbc is no more complicated than using divx5, so why would sbc be more for the pros and divx5 rather for beginners.

do you guys not manage to make perfect rips with divx5 or do you actually think your output quality with nandub is better than divx5?

if you'd say yes to the latter, let's go for some comparison

Just to add my two cents to this discussion.

I consider myself a divx encoder noob and have tried many dvd to divx tools as well as guides. After being pointed to gknot I have finally completed and converted a dvd to a nice 1 CDR divx file!
          I was quite amazed with the quality and the only thing I used was this tutorial here;

The only thing I changed was I set my options in dvd2avi to field deinterlace.

Other than that it took me a total of 4 hours to fully convert a dvd movie into a 699MB divx file with high quality.

I say that the quality of the to divx is the same... though I have noticed some difference between 5.02 and 3.11. The biggest one are that divx 5.02 is harder to play back on an old computer=( Noticed that in school.... when I made it bigscreen the picture got slow and the audio keept on going. The same movie with 3.11 didn't do that. That's the biggest difference I've noticed. Though... I have more problem getting the right filesize with different settings in 5.02=(

divx5 does indeed need more cpu power

filesize, however, hasnt been a problem for me
some 2cd rips might be a little BELOW 1400 but going for dual-language avis anyway this seldom occurs.

moreover, as long as the quality is great (and thanks to bframes it is) i dont care if divx5 takes some 100mb less then divx3

and in dark scenes divx5 does look better to me

                sorry 4 da late reply.

smooth playback was not on and the picture and (i think audio) froze and u had to close the app down to make it work. maybe it couldn't handle the action

but that is another improvement: to make playback smoother.
