Problems Encoding in Windows XP - HELP!

I just recently purchased a new desktop system with a AMD Athlon processor (1.8 GHz) and Windows XP Home Edition installed. After installing all my usual DVD ripping applications (ie Flask, VirtualDub, etc.), I tried ripping and encoding several DVD's. However, what I got surprised me.

The result was video with the equivalent of what appeared to be "panes" across the screen. I am pretty sure that it isnt a problem of de-interlacing. I tried different settings and still got the same thing.

Here is some important information in regards to my setup:

    Athlon 1.8 GHz Processor
    512 MB RAM
    Windows XP
    FlaskMPEG
    DivX 4.12

And I have tried both DivX 4.12 and 5.0 and have gotten the same result.

Is there some sort of new mechanism on the Windows XP system that makes it difficult to copy VOB files? or is this a simple problem that can be corrected easily otherwise?

    I appreciate the assistance.

Post a screenshot of the "panes" and if possible, outline the settings that you are using in Flask.

      I wish I could post a sample

I cant post a sample because of the adult nature of the avi file.

However, I can describe the "panes" as being horizontal across the screen with each pane approximately 5% of the overall height of the film. I am encoding the videos at a resolution of 480x320.

I never had this trouble before using a Pentium II 350 machine until I purchased this Athlon-based system.

I have tried ripping using different ripping methods including SmartRipper and CladDVD to no avail.

When I frameserve using DVD2AVI and encode the videos in TMPEGEnc, I dont have any problems with these "panes." It just occurs when I use the DivX codec.

As for settings... mmm... let me describe them... considering that I am using FlaskMPEG:

      480x320 output resolution
496x336 resolution before cropping down to output resolution
      DivX 4.12 Codec (1200 bitrate)
I have tried de-interlacing in both the on and off settings in both the codec settings screen and within FlaskMPEG.
I am using bicubic to resize the video.

Furthermore, I have tried XMPEG and got the same results and DVD2AVI has produced the same product each and everytime which leads me to believe that there is something wrong either with my codec settings or with my codec.

I have come to these possible conclusions:

      (1) my codec settings (which are the exact same as I have used them on my other machine) are incorrect and is causing the trouble.

      (2) my codec is problematic and needs to be fixed.

      (3) Windows XP has problems with the DivX codec.

I appreciate the responses... if you have any further insight, send it along... I really need to solve this problem. I figured a faster machine like this athlon would certainly make it faster to encode... but I have yet to get past this problem.

      TIA!

"I cant post a sample because of the adult nature of the avi file."

Surely, in even the most graphic adult video, there's a scene or two where "societally acceptable" behavior occurs (e.g. a scene without the donkey)...

(It REALLY would be most beneficial if you'd post an image, as opposed to a verbal description)

            Okay I get your point

You can check out the following URL for a sample video I just encoded minus the cropping...

and it shows nothing but a girl's face... lol...

Look closely when the video plays and you can see noticeable horizontal divisions. I never had these divisions while encoding on my PII-350 before... and with my new athlon-based machine, I get them on repeated attempts to encode video.

            Thanks for the assistance.

lol... yeah... just the girl's face... and a little titty... but you cant actually see anything... sorry... for all our underage viewers out there, I must rate it a TV-MA... lol

if you still have trouble, try typing in just "http://www.geocities.com/spooky0903/"

                and then selecting "Sample.avi"

                thanks

                    i'd suggest you try a different codec/tool/seetings

i couldnt provide you with any specific advice since this must be sort of a minor but clearly visible fault.

could you post the exact tool/settings that were used to create this file?

                      Okay... here goes...

In FlaskMPEG .7.8.39 I used the following settings:

Under the Output Format Options dialog:

I selected the DivX 4.12 codec using 1200 bitrate with no changes to the other default settings.

                      Under the Advanced Options:

                      Under the Video Tab:
I have the resolution set at 480x320
                      Time base (fps) at 29.97
                      DeInterlace Output Checkbox Checked
Blend Instead of Interpolate Checkbox Checked
                      Threshold set at 1

                      Under the Post Processing Tab:
                      I checked "Bicubic filtering"
and no cropping and I didnt check the "keep aspect ratio" box

The rest of it was pretty much default settings for Flask.

And btw... did the short video get you interested in the rest? LOL...

                      thanks for the help

I don't know how to tell you this, but the clip of the lip-licking young lady played back without any observable distortions under Windows Media Player v.6.4 (other than maybe that of the barely offscreen donkey ;>}) .

Perhaps you've got a problem with your videocard...

This is almost cirtainly caused by the less than perfect deinterlace filter in Flask.

                            mmmm... weird.

but I can say almost with certainty that my video card works with all the videos I encoded on my PII-350 without any distortions.

I played the same video encoded on my other computer on my athlon-based system and had no trouble with the horizontal distortions.

Try viewing the video full screen and perhaps you will see it. If you still dont observe the same problem, then I will start playing with some settings to improve playback.

                            Thanks!

If you look very closely there are some glitches along her cheek and the background. Try zooming the picture.
