Because DIVX is fast motion in nandub and MS MPEG v2 is low motion!

maybe you're right. I only asked this because when I chose divX in Nandub all works fine but when I chose mpeg4v2 the movie won't be compressed. I thought this happens because I don't have the mpeg4v2 codec but perhaps it's because any other reason.

          NOPE!

nandubs SMARTBITRATECONTROL is based on the fact that it can switch 'on the fly' from fast to low motion

          @assaultss

of course you will have to have ms v2 installed in order to use the codec in nandub.
m$ v1-3 are part of tsunamis filterpack btw.

Can somebody give a beginner some guidance. I have burned VCDs using TMPGenc and Nero (home videos captured from my camcorder to Studio DV, then edited, saved as .avi files and converted). The quality of VCD isn't very good on the TV using the set-top DVD player. Should I be stepping up here - what is DivX? How do I get better quality? Will I need a DVD burner, or is this with a CD burner? What player?

VCD is MPEG1 therefore not good quality.

SVCD is MPEG2 and good quality but more file size

DIVX is not playable on Stand alone DVD players.

On a PC, u can rip a DVD and convert to DIVX which will fit on one CD without loss of quality.

Techno, so if I want to watch on the PC, I can convert to DivX for better quality? What converter?

OK, I am not an expert at DVD rips, UncasMS is! I am a capture "expert"

To convert any video to DIVX:

Let's take a SVCD for an example:

Download and install the DIVX 3.11alpha codec (www.divx-digest.com)

                    Download Vidomi

                    open the SVCD file

                    choose the video settings:

fast motion 6000 bitrate, 75crisp (only use this if the quality is REALLY REALLY high, this fast motion will reduce the file size alot and good picture quality)

                    Or

most people choose low motion cause it's brilliant quality, but file size will be a bit large, DVD rips will fit on one CD with low motion. Use a bitrate calc (www.divx-digest.com) to figure out the bitrate to be used for low motion

                    Audio:

                    MP3 44100Hz 128 or 192 bitrate

                    Start encoding!

                    Wala, a DIVX video!

Please ask more questions about encoding if u wish to
