DVD to AVI or MPEG file

I am looking for a simple one step program that will convert VOB files to high quality AVI or MPG executables. I've used DVDx to convert DVD straight to MPEG but the quality sucks. Right now my only option is to plug the DVD player to my capture card, but this takes too much time. Are there any software out there that can do the conversion in a single step yet produce a high quality file? I don't care about the file size? I don't mind purchasing a commercial product.

    Thanks!

    hi!

DVDx is the best program for this!even if u buy another program you will see no difference...maybe you have not made the right settings in dvdx that's why you get bad results! because you said that file size doesn't matter for you setup dvdx at 1pass encoding
and set bitrate at 1500 kbit/s > bicubic encoding 640x272 for 16:9 movies 512x368 for 4:3 movies and you'll get great results!

    good luck!

      What settings?

Hmm...are you sure you are not referring to AVI settings? I need MPEG2 output. The bit rate is at the default 2376 already 480 x 480. The files are already huge. Are your output the same quality (or really close) as the original VOB at full screen.

      Thanks!

DVX for the conversion to avi/mpeg-4

        DVD2SVCD for vcd/mpeg-1 or scvd/dvd//mpeg-2 output

DVDx is a great program. If you used anithing else you will see no diference. If you need high qualita MPEG2, files will bee big with any program.

            That's very optimistic of you.

              Open vob with dvd2avi
              save project
open project with Tmpenc plus to convert to (s)vcd

not eactly one step, but its quite easy when u've done it once

The quality is NOT the same, I've tried a few. I need more than SVCD quality. In fact, I need the same quality in MPEG. I care about conversion speed, but I do NOT care about file size as I only snip out a minute or two after the conversion.

If you've already "ripped" (decrypted and copied to your hard drive) the .VOBs, use MPEGCutter (MPEG2CUT.EXE) to simply cut (visually) the clip you want and save with an ".MPG" extender. This will yield an executable MPEG-2 of EXACTLY the same quality as the original DVD source...

I've tried that...rename VOB to MPG and then edit. For some strange reason, some renamed VOB (about 30%) will crash the MPEG editing software. I've tried different MPEG editing software, but on those VOB the program either crashes or hangs. Don't know why...special encoding?

                      1) Have you SPECIFICALLY tried to use MPEGCutter (MPEG2CUT.EXE) to simply cut (visually) the clip you want and save with an ".MPG" extender?

                      2) What other, if any, "editing" do you have to perform, other than creating the clips of which you've spoken?

I've tried MPEGCutter on Sex and the City Season 4 Disc 1 and the program just freezes. If I passes the file to a VOB to MPEG converter...everything will be fine afterwards. Disc 2, 3, and 4 are okay.

By the way, it's an original disc and there are no scratches.

Off course. Thats why I said that only some of the VOB are giving me the problems. But if do a VOB to MPEG convert using a software, I can edit the MPEG (any MPEG from any DVD) without the software crashing.

I can't imagine why this would happen. I've used MPEGCutter literally hundreds of times - and it's never crashed.

                              As long as you've resolved your dilemma (At least I think that's what you're trying to say), congratulations ;>}
