            incorrect bitrate for divx

            thanks for a great guide to using gordian and the new divx 5 codec.

            i'm having a strange problem though. i've set everything up fine with a bitrate of 750 k/bits and when all the encoding is finished the resulting file has a bitrate of only 456 k/bits

            also when calculating the bitrate through gordian to fit on a certain number of cds, no adjustment seems to happen to take into account the different bitrate being used for the credits (which i've set at 8 and also covers an interview with director at end of movie).

            any ideas?

            regards,

            owen

              gk normally recalculates the 'remaining' bitrate (to be used for the main part except end-credits) AFTER encoding the end-credits with which gk always starts encoding.

              in the gk_log file you should find something like this:

              +++
              14:23:14: Started DivX5-Single, Quality 12%: F:\avi\alaska_Credits.avs
              14:25:50: Finished DivX5-Single, Quality 12%. Duration: 2 minutes, 35 seconds.
              14:25:50: Assumed: Main Movie has 126335 Frames.
              14:25:50: Assumed: Credits Part has 2913 Frames.
              14:25:50: Credits Size = 2354Kb
              14:25:50: New Bitrate for Movie = 1030 k(=1000)Bits/s
              +++

              the initial bitrate was +++ Bitrate: 1011 k(=1000)Bits/s
              +++

              i have no idea as to why your final avi was way smaller than it should have been.

              have you double-checked your settings with my guide and maybe did/could do another transcoding?

              and post your logfile!

                log file from undersized movie

                hi, thanks for your very speedy response.

                here is the log file from my most recent attempt. i see that it has a problem opening 'log file' i've no idea why this would be. when is that log file created?

                anyway, it says it's keeping the bitrate of 768 but the output movie has a bitrate of 456 as shown by avinfo (57 KB/sec).

                i've tried the guide several times but still the same result. i did try again following the guide but used divx 3.11 instead of 5.02 and the result was pretty accurate (well +/- 15 megs)

                thanks again for your help,

                owen

                  just realised that the above is one attempt where i didn't set any end credits. below is the log file for a previous attempt where the credits were set :

                      thnx for all your help. i've settled with the divx 3.11 encoded file as it does look pretty good.

                      i'm going to reformat windows and reinstall everything from fresh as this pc is just a bit clogged with stuff and is causing a few probs with other programs i've been trying to use. then i'll try the 5 codec again with a new dvd.

                        help! no divx5

                        I can't seem to use DivX5 with my GK. I have reinstalled/deleted DivX5 and reinstalled GK, telling it not to install DivX4. But, I am still stuck with 4 instead of 5 in GK. Does anyone know why?

                          are you sure, you're using the latest gordianknot version 0.26b?
                          0.23 wont handle divx5.

                              I'm using the guide, and i'm up to selecting the Audio A

                              And i was wondering which of the three files should i select, 384 or 192?

                              Are they the same or do i have to select the first one?
