.avi playback freezing

hi, i have a very wierd problem with my computer. everytime i play a good quality avi file, the computer freezes. sometimes the movie will play for a while then freeze or sumtimes it will freeze at the begining. any ideas what the problem is??

what codec is it?

the codec is diVX codec 4.11

[setarip]

Uninstall your DivX v.4.xx codec.

Install the DivX v.3.11alpha codec.

Reinstall the v.4.xx codec and answer with a resounding "No!" to the question, "Do you want the DivX v.4.xx codec to play v.3.11 videos?"
