SLLOOOWWWWWWWW playback

There are a few videos I've DLed that playback at around half the normal speed... is there a player I can DL that will let me change the speed of the movie? Or any other solution?
Also, I've DLed a few movies that won't play at all. They are .avi movies, but WMP says the file type isn't supported. I've installed/reinstalled all the most recent codecs.

have you tried different player like bsplayer, powerdivx or media player classic only to name a few?

yeah, it doesn't work with any of the players. All say it's an unknown or unsupported file format. Or not a DivX movie. Where do you suggest I DL movies in the future?
